I always knew I could write a novel and, eventually, I did. It’s still languishing in the desk drawer. But being one determined lady, I wrote another, followed by a third, a West London 1950s saga which, surprisingly for me, was shortlisted for the Harry Bowling Prize a few years ago. That led to me finding an agent but, sadly, the agent couldn’t find a publisher. But did I give up? No. I wrote a fourth and have just completed my fifth.
So, you may ask, what am I going to do with them? Well, what I won’t do is give up. Novel four has just been sent to an agent in America and as soon as I have finished editing and proofing book five, I will be seeking a publisher for it. And I will keep on sending out my work until a publisher finds me. I don’t want to be famous, would actually rather be infamous, but seeing a book published would be a bonus and make my mother proud.
You see, writing is a drug. I crave it. I spend a lot of my spare time doing it, in secret, in my room, in my lunch hour, in my head when trying to get to sleep. It’s adictive. When I’m not writing I miss it.
In a bid to satisfy this craving to create, I also paint landscapes, both real and imaginery, using acrylics. If you would like to see some of my work, both the art and read extracts from my books, then take a short journey across to my world
where there is a warm welcome for all.
Thank you.
Hi, I'm Christine Stovell, my debut novel,
Turning the Tide
has just been published by independent publishers Chock Lit.
I knew I wanted to be a writer when I won a tin of chocolate in a national essay competition at primary school, but it took losing my dad to cancer, five years ago, to make me realise that if I was ever going to get a novel published I had to put my writing first.
We moved from Surrey, where I was born, to the beautiful west Wales coast. An early boost came when I had work accepted by Honno Welsh Women’s Press. I also took up long-distance running which helps me plan my plots. Half marathons and novels both begin with small steps!
Turning the Tide is based in a sleepy seaside town on the east coast. The idea came to me when my husband I were sailing round Britain in our vintage wooden boat... it took my mind off being very seasick! It’s the story of one woman’s quest to keep her father’s boatyard afloat and the town she loves unchanged. When a handsome property developer arrives with ambitious plans for the area and quickly gains local support, it looks as if thing can only go one way, but there are plenty of surprises ahead.
I’m currently working on Move Over Darling, my second novel for Choc Lit. It’s the story of heroine who’s escaped to the country meeting a hero who’s escaped from the country. This time my research took me to New York. We managed to get a great deal on a fabulous hotel... during a particularly cold spell. I discovered how walking about in temperatures of well below freezing, really hurts the inside of your nose – but maybe I won’t put that in the book.
Perhaps I should think about warm, sunny settings in future – Pauline’s got the right idea living in Lanzarote! Until then a big thank you to Pauline for inviting me to be her guest.

Hi, I’m Shirley Wells and I write mystery novels set in the north-west of England.
My latest novel, Presumed Dead, is a bit
of a departure for me in that it’s been
published digitally. That’s right, as an ebook.
As an avid reader, I was slowly coming round
to the idea that, maybe, just maybe, there
was something in this ebook lark. (I am,
sadly, old enough to remember having to
replace my vinyl albums with CDs. Now, of
course, I download music from the internet.)
So, although I couldn’t see myself reading a
digital book, I thought others might and,
when I saw that Carina Press, part of Harlequin, was starting a new digital-first imprint, I was excited. When I heard that the hugely-talented Angela James was heading up this new venture, I was very excited.
Needless to say, with an ebook published, I needed a device on which to show it off. I looked at all the ereaders - the Sony, the Nook, the Kindle - and settled on the iPad. I’ve downloaded many books onto it and I am now a convert. I love the reading experience - a backlit screen so less strain on the eyes, no hunting for bookmarks, no carrying large books about, the ability to take a couple of hundred books on holiday.
I’d love to hear people’s views on print versus digital books.
Hi, I'm Elaine Hensel, a lover of reading, cycling, gardening and most of all baking delicious cakes.
When I'm not working as a proof reader
and translator, you can find me struggling
with a new recipe, or with the never ending
job of weeding the garden. At weekends I
cycle for miles with my husband, and we always
end up in some lovely ‘Bier Garten’ or Café.
To find out more about me, please take a look at my web site
My family have read both of your books and thought they were great. Hurry up with the next one please! When they are not reading they help with the building of our new Pizza Ovens. So if you are a pizza fan and would love to have your own pizza oven and live in Norfolk or Suffolk please send an email for details, price etc.
